The History of Cherrydale
The neighborhood’s roots date back to 1893 when a post office located at Pollard Street and Lee Highway was named Cherrydale. The name was in reference to an extensive cherry orchard situated behind what is today the historic firehouse. At that time, modern-day Quincy Street was known as Cherry Valley Road.
After the Civil War, settlement began in the area, and by the late nineteenth century, Cherrydale started to evolve from a rural agricultural crossroads into a residential area with a popular commercial corridor along Lee Highway.
The Cherrydale Citizen’s Association was formed just a few years after the neighborhood was founded, making it Arlington’s second-oldest association. The association has done an excellent job of preserving the neighborhood’s history and charm.
