Lyon Village has a long history dating back to 1846 when Robert Cruit purchased a 163-acre property of which the neighborhood would later be a part. According to the National Register of Historic Places, Cruit bought the land as a retreat from his D.C. home. The first section of Lyon Village was platted with traffic circles and curvy tree-lined streets in 1923 by Frank Lyon.

Cruit’s heirs had sold the property to Frank Lyon, and during the 1930s through the 1950s, the neighborhood was enlarged, and newly platted parts were given a more grid-like pattern.

During the 1980s and 1990s, many original Lyon Village homes received additions, often in the form of enlarged kitchens, extra bedrooms, or added family rooms. More recently, many original houses have been torn down and replaced with larger, more modern homes.
